If nicer folks ever walked the earth, I haven't met them.
But hey, Gerry was a star football player at Middletown High in his youth, his kids went to the Middletown public schools, his grandchildren played sports including football at Middletown High, so I always knew where his rooting interests really were. He was a Tiger, a Wildcat and a Blue Dragon through and through.
As has been the case for so many games I have announced, Gerry Behm walked into the press box to run the clock. A football official for 56 years, Gerry became a clock operator after giving up his Balenciaga Bag Sale Philippines on field officiating duties. Gerry was part of a game, simple as that.
son to call me to tell me how much he appreciated us working together and how grateful he was that I had been cooperative with him in getting all the facts right on the scoreboard.
His lovely wife Bette was a secretary for a long time at Middletown High, too. Always knew who Bette rooted for. Always.
Then came real life in the form of death, of massacre and murder in Newtown.
Gerry was devastated. But while lying in a hospital bed, he wanted his Guess Purses Ebay Uk
me his dad was in the hospital. We all knew Gerry had not been well for years, but figured he would battle through to be there on Thanksgiving as he always did. But his son told me that the doctors told his dad that he could not do the Thanksgiving Day game.
A few days before Thanksgiving, I got a call from his son Gerry. He told Balenciaga Backpack Women's
I asked his son to tell his dad that I was thinking about him and was very grateful he had taken the time to call me. Then, life being what it is, other things intervened. Middletown and Xavier were in the playoffs. There were stories and columns to be written, games to attend and announce, and even more stories to be written.
Doing a game with Gerry was always fun. We would work together. I would announce that so and so carried the ball, then give the down and yard line as I always did. Gerry would wait until I was finished, then post the numbers on the board. Sometimes the ball was midway between yard lines and we'd agree it was the 42 or the 43, and that's what Gerry would put on the board.
See, every year Gerry ran the clock for the Middletown vs. Xavier game. He loved doing it. It was the highlight of his season.
over. Real life.
I would see them both outside of the football season. Both were avid supporters of Middletown Legion baseball. They had sons and grandsons who played high school and Legion ball. But Gerry and Bette didn't need a relative playing to bring them to Palmer Field. They would visit the ballpark each summer, saying hello to their many friends. Usually they would make it up to the press box not an easy climb for a lot of folks much younger than they but they would come in, talk a bit about sports, friends, family.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, I was finishing up my usual pregame work before beginning the announcement of lineups for the Hartford Public vs. Middletown High football game at Rosek Skubel Stadium. It was a nice day, following the inclement weather of the night before that had postponed the game to Saturday.
Middletown's Gerry Behm was epitome of kindness
On that Saturday, we all thought that the game had a potential to be a good one, but it turned out to be a Middletown rout. Gerry, the pro that he was, did his job right down the middle, never rooting or cheering for either team.
When the game with Hartford Public ended, I scrambled as usual to close the game and I made the announcement that the next game was with Xavier on Thanksgiving and bid the crowd a safe ride drive home. Gerry then waved and said, "See you on Thanksgiving."
The Christmas season began and there were parties to plan and attend, gifts to buy, grandchildren to dote Mini Balenciaga City Bag
Like every other clock operator, he sometimes didn't catch the timeout on the field. "Gerry, clock!," I would say. "Got it," he would say back. And on we went. Other times I would say, "First and 10 on the 28." Gerry would correct, "Uhhh, it's the 38." Oops. It's called bailing each other out.
Typical Gerry. It was never about him, it was always about someone else.
Then, Thursday the 20th, five days before Christmas, my morning papers announced that dear, sweet Gerry a man whom I never once saw angry, a man whom I never heard say a bad thing about anyone, died on Tuesday.
