Even with a loss in Canada on Friday, the Menace will enter this Saturday's home match against Springfield with 12 points from five games (St. Louis has 12 points from seven games). Another three points could put Des Moines in the driver's seat of the entire Central Conference.
THE GOOD: This tournament is producing goals in bunches, with five matches producing four or more, "GOOOAL!" calls. Fans have had to endure just one draw through 14 World Cup matches on Monday. An average of 3.1 goals per game has made for a few surprises and plenty of excitement.
THE BAD: Naughty red cards from Portugal's Pepe and Uruguay's Maxi Pereira marred a pair of attractive victories by Germany and Costa Rica. Pepe head butted a seated Thomas Muller to doom the trailing Portuguese with 10 men for over an hour. Pereira was clearly frustrated with the 2010 semifinalists trailing to the upstart Ticos and took a late hack at goal scorer Joel Campbell.
THE UGLY: Protests roll on in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia as FIFA and the Brazilian government are under scrutiny for lavish spending on this summer's event. Cheers in stadiums have been louder on TV than the boos outside of them, but the streets are not clearing any time soon.

Snapping an eight match winless streak in Thunder Bay on Saturday, the Menace are now tied atop the Premier Development League's Heartland Division with two games in hand.

Des Moines previously won the Heartland Division in 2002 and 2009 but hasn't qualified for the PDL playoffs since 2011. That number could have been much higher, considering North Scott's girls beat eight time defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier en route Guess Iphone Case
Thunder Bay had been a graveyard for the Menace in recent seasons. They lost seven times and had one draw when they played doubleheaders north of the border in the last four seasons. Chris Hellmann and Ralphie Lundy had a goal and an assist each in Saturday's 3 2 victory, another confidence boost for an ambitious side.
