Concerns about an ancestral Mi'kmaw burial ground being located in Gaspereau Lake have not been confirmed to date in the reported locations. However, archaeological research does suggest a possible burial ground outside the areas of impact.
In Nova Scotia, it is standard practice of archaeologists not dig or disturb the soil when Mi'kmaq ancestral burials Red Balenciaga Belt
Dorey, a Mi'kmaq elder who grew up beside the lake, has been attempting for five or six years to have his concerns listened to and protection placed on an area where ancient native settlements and a burial ground are believed to have been located at the foot of the lake.
Dorey, who is 75, says he has been lobbying because, "that is our ancestral ground. That used to be my home, and we have very strong feelings about having it disturbed."
Until the results of this assessment are complete, the areas of the possible burial grounds will remain untested.
"We would never allow or support digging into graves or disturbing any remains," said Chief Wilbert Marshall, assembly lead chief on culture, heritage and archaeology. "Engineering plans will not be supported until concerns for impacts to possible burials can be appropriately addressed."
The release also acknowledges that an archaeological assessment of the area yielded a large number of artifacts and the site has a very rich Native history.

The assembly says its will continue to monitor the work at Gaspereau Lake through its own staff archaeologist, Dr. Heather MacLeod Leslie, to ensure that research in the area is done in the best interests of the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia.
engineering plans. Now the organization says it has requested an independent engineering assessment be done to see if the refurbishment can be done on a location further downstream since the area is rich with archaeological heritage.
Five months after Henry Dorey, a Mi'kmaq elder from Waterville, registered concerns about a pending dam upgrade at Gaspereau Lake, the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs is calling for further study in the area.
