Yvette Couser, director of the library, said the campaign has until June 1 this Sunday to raise the money. If it doesn't, the machine, which was installed in April when half the money was raised, will go back to the Boston College Educational Seismology Project. But Couser also said she's optimistic the library will be granted an extension or be able to raise the money.

Installing one of the machines in the Merrimack library makes perfect sense, Couser said, because part of the library's mission is to offer free educational opportunities.

"It's been fantastic. Everyone thinks it's really neat," she said. "That's really what the library is about providing things that are educational and for enrichment."

Couser said some of the younger kids in the program will build their own seismographs, and older students will learn about earthquake survival techniques.

MERRIMACK Time is running out for the Merrimack Public Library's campaign to raise $10,000 to purchase a seismograph as part of a collaboration with a Boston College educational program.

It was installed late in the school year, so some of the first opportunities for kids to really explore the data the seismograph gathers will come this summer during the library's Summer Reading Challenge.

The purchase of the seismograph is part of a partnership with the Boston College ESP designed to use seismology to offer kids a way to participate in scientific research. It's run by the Boston College Geology and Geophysics Department through the Weston Observatory.

"We are getting down to the wire. It's exciting," Couser said. "I'm pretty optimistic. I think it will be fine.".

As of Tuesday, the library still needed to raise almost $2,800, according to its website.

Couser said donations to the fundraising campaign have ranged from $3 to more than $1,000 from the Friends of Merrimack Free Library and local businesses. She's hoping to get an extension to raise the remainder of the money since some of the boards she's approached Guess Reversible Tote won't meet until after the June 1 deadline. If the money isn't raised, the machine will have to be returned to the Boston College program and the donations returned, she said.

The machines measure earthquakes worldwide, according to the project's website.

She hopes to partner with Merrimack science teachers interested in integrating the machine in earth science lessons during the next school year.
